Question:
What types of b’rachoth are appropriate on desserts eaten during a meal with bread? Does it matter what type of dessert is eaten?
Answer:
-
All foods, including cakes, which are served after the main course as a dessert, require the appropriate b’rakha both before and after the dessert, before Birkath HaMazon.
-
If one did not say the b’rakha after the dessert, before BHM, one must say it after BHM.
-
Most people don’t know this, or believe this is not the Halakha – but it is. I cannot go into the details now. See Rambam’s MT B’rakhoth 4:11.
