Blessings on Dessert

Question:
What types of b’rachoth are appropriate on desserts eaten during a meal with bread? Does it matter what type of dessert is eaten?

Answer:
  1. All foods, including cakes, which are served after the main course as a dessert, require the appropriate b’rakha both before and after the dessert, before Birkath HaMazon.
  2. If one did not say the b’rakha after the dessert, before BHM, one must say it after BHM.
  3. Most people don’t know this, or believe this is not the Halakha – but it is. I cannot go into the details now. See Rambam’s MT B’rakhoth 4:11.
